The American Lung Association and Reducing Radon Lung Cancer
The American Lung Association is proud of the recent steps in improving the overall lung health of the nation by the announced reduction in radon lung cancer. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will be working to reduce the amount of radon gas in multi-family homes in the Bethlehem area, and across the nation. New guidelines set in place by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, will help make Bethlehem a much safer place.
There is a group of U.S. organizations known as the Federal Healthy Homes Work Group that is dedicated to make sure that all homes are a safe and healthy. The group is comprised of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Association, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Together these organizations are able to make big changes for improvement in health in the community and the United States.
HUD has made it a recent requirement that all multi-family homes that are funded through them will be required to have a radon test. Radon cannot be seen or smelled, making this a valuable asset for Bethlehem residents. Additionally, HUD will require all multi-family homes that are financed through them which have tested to have high levels to have an air purification system installed. This will help reduce the radon lung cancer amounts in Bethlehem and across the nation.
The Threat of Radon Lung Cancer
Annually, 21,000 people perish from radon lung cancer. Radon accounts for roughly 15% of all lung cancer cases, and affects about one out of every fifteen homes. It is not a smart choice to go unprotected from this gas. It is advised to test your home at least once every three years to ensure that the levels are safe, and that your home is not infested with this gas.
Radon forms from the uranium in the soil beneath Bethlehem homes. As uranium breaks down, this gas forms and seeps up through the foundation and into the home. This gas may also enter the water supply, or even be in the materials used to build the home. No matter what the levels of your home are, S.W.A.T. Environmental has properly trained specialist that can reduce the levels by as much as 99%.
S.W.A.T.
